Former UK lecturer Betsy Packard received a barrage of criticism after she posted on X that the devastation and loss of life in southern Appalachia caused by Hurricane Helene could be God’s judgment on supporters of Donald Trump. A swift reaction followed the ill-advised and ugly tweet, as many conservatives called for UK to fire her. But they didn’t realize that Packard has not been employed by UK for two years. UK received harsh criticism for Packard’s post, nonetheless. The tweet demonstrates bad judgment on her part, but it’s also a reminder of the importance of truth in politics. Before criticizing, and especially before posting criticism on social media, make sure that you have the facts straight. We’d all do better if we’d follow this advice.
