Back in June, Hurricane Helene swamped North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia with massive floods. Hundreds lost their lives and resulted in an estimated quarter of a trillion dollars in damage. President Trump and Vice President Vance surveyed the devastation last week and encouraged residents. President Trump suggested an overhaul of FEMA, which has proved inefficient and failed to respond in a timely manner. These frustrations are felt across party lines. Vermont Senator Peter Welch said he hopes to work closely with President Trump to fundamentally reform the organization after its failure to handle floods in Vermont and the wildfires in LA. It’s a good reminder that in times of disaster, Americans must put aside politics and do what’s best for their neighbors.
