The NBA found itself at the center of a major federal crackdown involving illegal sports betting and rigged gambling operations. More than 30 individuals were charged across 11 states, including Terry Rozier of the Miami Heat and coach Chauncey Billups of the Portland Trail Blazers. Rozier is accused of providing non-public information about games to bettors; Billups is also implicated in an illegal poker ring tied to organized crime. Federal officials described the fraud as “mind-boggling.” It involved rigged poker games, insider athletic information, and well-known crime families. These latest arrests remind us of the dangers of mainstreaming sports betting, the corruption it brings. In the end, it compromises the integrity of professional sports competition.
