More than six million illegal immigrants have crossed our nation’s southern border since 2020, and the problem will likely get worse. That’s because Title 42, a set of immigration restrictions implemented under Pres. Trump, prevented over 2.5 million migrants from entering the country. But President Biden recently allowed the measure to expire, arguing that its policies were superficial. According to Biden, comprehensive congressional reform is needed. As a consequence, Biden’s removal of Title 42 without a meaningful replacement will strain state and local governments currently overwhelmed by illegal immigrants. Biden admitted that “[the border is] going to be chaotic for a while” but his lack of urgency undermines the primary responsibility of the federal government, which is to control our nation’s borders.
