Today is Constitution Day. On September 17, 1787, our Founding Fathers brought the colonies together to create a stronger federal government. The Constitution is considered one of the greatest political documents in history and it’s what unifies and binds us together as a nation. The genius of the Founders was that they separated the roles and functions of government. You probably remember your grade school civics lesson that talked about the three branches of government—executive, legislative and judicial, and the idea of checks and balances; the idea of enumerated rights and limits on the federal government. The genius of the constitution is that it protects us from the fallen nature of mankind and shields us from concentrated power and tyrannical government that would trample our rights. And it is worth celebrating today!
