The University of Tennessee will offer a course on the intersectionality of “race, sexuality, and feminism” in Taylor Swift’s songs. There are similar courses at other universities. Russell Sage College in New York announced a new voice modification program for transgender people to alter the way they speak, cough, and sneeze so they can appear like the opposite sex. University of Louisville has a minor in LGBTQ studies. Universities once offered classes and degrees that would enlarge the souls of students. It’s argued today that university imparts employability skills. But the examples I just shared do neither. And this explains the attitudes of nearly half of American adults who reported in a recent Pew survey that the importance of a college degree has declined.
