A Christian bookstore is suing the state of Colorado after it passed a law that requires citizens to refer to each other using preferred pronouns. Some insist that using preferred pronouns is common courtesy and that the state has a right to enforce this speech code. But this violates the biblical view of gender as being male and female. It also violates conscience. The legal group Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is defending the owners of the bookstore and argue that the law is a substantial burden to the owner’s sincerely held religious beliefs. Now this isn’t the first time the state has been sued over First Amendment violations. In 2023, the Supreme Court overturned a Colorado law that violated the First Amendment rights in a similar issue.
