Words tell us something about ourselves and how we think. Brain-rot is the 2024 word of the year according to Oxford University Press. Now, that tells us a lot about our culture. Brain-rot is “the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging.” We experience brain-rot because of time spent on social media and our phones. These mediums short circuit a well-rounded and careful thought process. And it hasn’t improved our human condition. In light of sloppy thinking and brain-rot, let’s spend less time in the mindless digital world and recommit to careful thinking and renewing our minds in 2025.
