A common theme in this year’s Kentucky General Assembly is concern for children. Now a bill has been proposed to regulate the social media use of minors. HB 450 requires social media companies to verify the ages of its users, and, if a user is under 18, a parent or guardian would need to give authorization. The bill would also require apps to allow parents to view the content their children are creating and viewing and their messages. Rep. Josh Calloway (R-Irvington) said that we protect kids from harmful and addictive things like alcohol and tobacco. He argues that if we’re to be consistent in protecting children we need to regulate social media “in some way, shape, or form to make sure that minors aren’t harmed by that.” This bill should receive bipartisan support, as protecting our children from addiction and exploitation should be a priority for all Kentuckians.
