Kentuckians are up in arms about the ramifications of President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill on the horse betting industry. The bill offers provisions that benefit horse owners but makes it more difficult for bettors to turn a profit. Congressman and Senate candidate Andy Barr of Lexington applauds the security the bill offers the horse racing industry. Others are furious, insisting the bill taxes horse bettors “into oblivion” by reducing the amount of losses one can deduct from their taxes. But while this reduction may result in careful bet, good public policy doesn’t encourage gambling at all. Betting encourages personal gain without work, which runs contrary to the principle of a healthy economy and responsible financial management—thereby undermining both.
