The Biden administration has proposed a nationwide ban on gas stoves. They cite studies that have revealed that emissions from these stoves can cause numerous health and respiratory problems, like cancer and asthma. But is banning a standard cooking appliance an issue the federal government should concern itself with? Why not leave an issue like this up to state governments? Studies come out every year exposing the potential harms of everyday items, from cell phones to gas cars. And as we know, with new technology, there are certain risks—risks that a free people can weigh the costs and benefits of and make their own decisions on whether or not to use them. When we forget this and allow the federal government to rule out basic choices, something of our freedom is lost.
