The rule of law is only as strong as the integrity of those who uphold it. Wisconsin Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan was arrested after hiding an illegal immigrant after she learned that federal agents were trying to arrest him. Regardless of one’s stance on immigration, judges must apply the law impartially, not manipulate it for personal or political reasons. This case highlights the need for judicial accountability. No one is above the law and Judge Dugan in particular should have known better since she’s an officer of the legal system and sworn to uphold the law. The Wisconsin Supreme Court’s decision to suspend Dugan sends the message that judges are also under the law and consequences await those who violate it.
