Are Drag Queens Pillars of Light? According to a story in the Louisville Courier-Journal, the answer is yes. The headline that was featured in their email letter said: “Louisville’s queens of drag: Loud, proud & unbowed — but at a cost.” It went on to say, “Drag queens, drag performers, drag kings, become pillars of light that project that you can live an openly queer life, be healthy and successful.” But is this true? Many involved in drag identify as transgender, and studies have found that the transgender population as a whole has significant mental health, physical, and sociological problems. Celebrating drag as healthy is a fiction. It undermines clear moral boundaries, is confusing to children and should be opposed by those concerned about human flourishing.
