Attorney General Russell Coleman says that the Fayette County Public School Board broke the law by attempting to raise taxes on families within the district. State Senator Amanda Mays Bledsoe of Lexington requested Coleman’s opinion after constituents complained about the new tax hike. Upon investigation, Coleman found that the board failed to follow state protocol concerning the increase. Constituents weren’t even made aware the vote was going to happen. Sen. Bledsoe says the decision validates what so many in the community felt: “Transparency regarding public tax dollars isn’t optional – it’s foundational.” As a result the tax increase appears to be put on hold. And it’s a reminder of the checks and balances we have to keep government accountable.
