Three Jewish women in Louisville recently challenged Kentucky’s abortion ban by claiming that it violated their religious liberty. According to the women, Jewish belief holds that life begins at birth, not conception. However, Jefferson Circuit Court Judge Brian Edwards ruled against their challenge. He said these women do not have standing and their fears were “hypothetical.” These women have the right to believe whatever they want. But their beliefs are not supported by the Old Testament, which acknowledges unborn human life in the womb. Nor is their belief supported by science. Judge Edwards upheld Kentucky’s law that says one person cannot inflict physical harm or death upon another, especially upon the most vulnerable in our society.
