Seattle Public Schools placed lockers in some middle and high schools stocked with “gender-affirming” supplies, which I will not mention here. The goal is to support students who identify as the opposite sex. The school is now facing sharp criticism for transitioning minors behind the backs of parents. Others ask how this is in line with the mission of public schooling. Schools are trusted with more than education; they have incredible moral influence over children and are responsible to protect developing youth. When public education steps into such personal and intimate territory without regard to parental authority, there is a breech of public trust. Public schools should build character, not confuse it, which is what Seattle’s “locker project” unfortunately does.
