Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman is suing Chinese e‑commerce platform Temu—it’s China’s version of Amazon, but cheaper. Coleman accuses Temu of misusing personal data, counterfeiting iconic Kentucky brands, and overall consumer fraud. According to the complaint filed in Woodford County Circuit Court on July 17, Temu allegedly collects sensitive information—such as geolocation, installed apps, and microphone access—without user consent. The data is then accessible to the Chinese government. The suit also claims Temu sold counterfeit products bearing trademarks tied to the University of Kentucky, Churchill Downs, and Buffalo Trace. Of course, ripping off trademarks makes it easy to sell cheap. Coleman is seeking civil penalties under consumer protection law and aims to bar deceptive data practices and counterfeit trade.
