Federal and state prosecutors have charged over 300 people for defrauding the U.S. government out of $15 billion in false health care claims. It is the largest take-down of the kind. The previous record of federal fraud was $250 million. This latest scam involved transnational criminal organizations and used stolen identities to file fake Medicare claims. DOJ criminal division leader Matthew Galeotti reminded Americans that “These criminals didn’t just steal someone else’s money. They stole from you.” While federal law enforcement should be commended, there’s a lesson here: the federal largess in America’s healthcare is a prime target for cyber criminals. It’s also also an argument that such social programs should be handed back to the state where there’s better oversight and more accountability.
