The Journal of the American Medical Association released a troubling report last Wednesday linking screen addiction to suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The study tracked screen use of over 4000 children between the ages of 9 to 14. The study specifically tracked signs of addictive and compulsive use, including distress when not using devices and the inability to cut back on screen time. Those who exhibited signs of addiction showed two to three times the risk of committing suicide. The study is helpful, but confirms something we already knew: too much screen time isn’t healthy for kids. They need to engage in real life activity with their others. They should spend time outside, read books, and being creative with their mind and hands. This should be something that we should all agree on.
