Last week Governor Beshear and leaders across the state gathered to launch the new “Pre-K for All” initiative. Beshear saw the moment as one of political unity— insisting the movement was one without party-lines. According to Kentucky statistics, over half of Kentucky’s children are academically unprepared on the first day of Kindergarten. Supporters say universal pre-K would help children succeed. Opponents criticize this as government encroaching into the role of parenting and wonder whether these same children would actually be more prepared for school. As it is, most children spend more time at school than with their families, and some are questioning whether starting school even earlier is a good idea. In either case, Gov. Beshear will be traveling the state to try to convince Kentuckians that “Pre-K for All” is a good idea.
