Proponents of abortion argue that the practice should be legal because it is often medically necessary. However, the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services reported only one medically necessary abortion between January and March. In Kentucky, abortion is legal when the mother’s life is threatened. In fact, House Bill 90, which passed earlier this year, clarifies when an abortion meets these standards. The provision recognizes miscarriage management; removal of ectopic and molar pregnancies; sepsis treatment; hemorrhage control; and management of fetal demise and stillbirth as protected medical treatments. These abortions are rare, as the data bears out. But it reminds us of the tragedy of each death and shows the moral necessity of protecting the life of the mother.
