Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently signed a historic school choice bill into law. It’s the second state in recent weeks to enact sweeping education reform. The bill establishes a $1 billion education savings account so families can send their children to the school of their choice. Many groups across the state are rejoicing, calling the bill a step toward greater educational freedom. Yet there are concerns that the law will hurt public schools, as public school students may leave to attend private schools. One of the questions missing in the debate over school choice is: what is best for the student? For kids trapped in failing schools in Texas, school choice empowers parents to put their kids on a path leading to better education outcomes.
