President Donald Trump has repeatedly tossed around the idea of Canada becoming the 51st state. This banter appears tongue-in-cheek. But it may not be—at least for one Canadian province. Earlier this month, Alberta announced that it will hold a referendum on separation from Canada next year if a citizen-led petition reaches the required number of signatures. Following the political victory of Mark Carney’s Liberal Party, many citizens of this more conservative province are concerned for the future. Alberta is rich in oil and also more conservative than the rest of Canada, meaning the possibility of leaving is not completely impossible. The Premier of Alberta, Danielle Smith, said that while she does not personally support the effort, she will accept the final vote of her citizens.
