A group called Colossal Biosciences claims to have revived the extinct Dire Wolf. Colossal is a company committed to the idea of “de-extinction,” using DNA from related animals to recreate lost species. Critics argue that doing this is not truly bringing an extinct species back. Nor are they asking what does this mean for us? There are ethical and scientific concerns, comparing the efforts to the movie Jurassic Park and warning of unforeseen ecological consequences. Colossal isn’t stopping with the Dire Wolf; it hopes to bring back more species, like the Tasmanian tiger and even the Woolly Mammoth. As scientists move into uncharted scientific territory, it forces us to confront the ethical and ecological dilemmas of resurrecting species long lost to time.
