The National Institutes of Health funded a study in 2015, to see whether puberty blockers improved the mental health of children who identify as transgender. Before treatment, one quarter were depressed and suicidal. After taking puberty blockers the study found that children’s mental health did not improve. But the renowned doctor who led the study said she concealed the results for years because of America’s political climate. She said that she didn’t want her work to become “weaponized.” It’s a shame that important science was hidden for political reasons. Because of this, children and families who rely on the scientific community are suffering. Science should help bring light to the truth, and this new information should move us towards public policy that protects children.
