The United Methodist Church officially lifted its ban on same-sex marriage ceremonies and LGBT clergy at its most recent General Conference. While most conservative Methodists already left the denomination, fallout is continuing. In response to the decision, churches in the Ivory Coast in Africa exited the UMC; that represents over 1 million people, a tenth of the denomination. Observer Mark Tooley said that while the UMC will likely disappear in the near future, “Methodism in Africa, in whatever format, will continue to thrive” because of theological fidelity. The UMC’s decision should not come as a surprise, as theological liberals rid themselves of the boundaries of biblical Christianity. But as they do so, their denomination will continue to disappear while conservative congregations are expected to flourish.
