Gambling on sporting events is now legal in Kentucky. Since the first bets were placed on sporting events on September 7, calls to Kentucky’s gambling addiction hotline have tripled. Many who gamble on sports simply view it as fun and harmless entertainment, but for others who gamble, they find that an addiction comes to life. One percent of the adult population have a gambling disorder and 2 to 3% have a gambling problem. And one in five individuals with a gambling problem will attempt or complete suicide. How tragic. The Kentucky legislature earmarked over $1 million to assist problem and compulsive gamblers. This is a tacit admission that serious problems come with gambling. The bottom line is that any amount of money won’t be enough to fix broken families and lives ruined by gambling.
