The U.S. Department of Defense is embracing progressive politics in America’s military. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced generous time off and travel subsidies for servicewomen who cannot get an abortion in states that ban them. This circumvents federal policy for political ends and ignores the authority of Congress which prohibits this kind of action. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) held up the confirmation of hundreds of officers for months, drawing attention to our military’s commitment to leftwing politics over military readiness. But now he’s yielding under immense pressure. The Department of Defense has an obligation to follow the law. And so long as it denies Congressional authority, it sends the message to our service members that following orders is an option.
