The Israeli-Hamas war has revealed latent anti-semitism and led to people publicly taking sides. In a few cases, heated emotions have led to violence in the United States. High school students in New York City rioted outside a teacher’s office for two hours after the teacher attended a pro-Israel rally. Then, three Palestinian college students in Burlington, Vermont, were shot while walking to dinner. Violent words often lead to violent actions. And latent animus toward Israel is just a few incendiary comments away from full blown violence. The answer to lawless rage isn’t more lawless rage. It’s the defense of the innocent within just laws. This is because rage and vigilantism are always wrong and can never satisfy the human need for justice.
