A leading developer of Artificial Intelligence was fired and then rehired within a matter of days. One of the factors was his optimism about the future potential of A.I. Sam Altman wants to develop A.I. further, while admitting that he’s not entirely certain where it could lead. Understandably, his attitude has caused concern. Now, we must remember that many technological developments in the past have had critics, including the computer itself. But it’s also important to remember that technology isn’t neutral. It shapes us. A.I. may be used for good, but it has negative uses like deep fakes which chip away at trust and social cohesion. Technology should serve, not subvert us. And these are considerations that must be included in this conversation over A.I.
