Earlier this year the Kentucky state legislature passed a bill banning the collection of union dues from public salaries. A Franklin Circuit Court Judge ruled the measure is unconstitutional. The law (SB 7) primarily affects teachers’ unions, which automatically deducted dues from the public school payrolls. According to Lt. Gov. Candidate Robby Mills, the money was used for blatant political activism of teachers unions. For example, last year the Jefferson County Teachers’ Association spent three quarters of a million dollars ($770,000) opposing conservative school board candidates. To use state systems used for political activism is inappropriate. That’s why Attorney General Daniel Cameron filed an appeal to the judge’s ruling. In the meantime, teachers unions will continue collecting dues.
