Accidental drug overdoses are now the number one cause of death for young Americans in 37 states, including Kentucky. Since 2018, drug overdoses have claimed almost 177,000 lives. Drugs, which typically aren’t fatal, are increasingly being laced with the deadly fentanyl. It’s tragic, but larger questions loom. Why are so many young people numbing themselves with drugs? After all, America is the most prosperous and comfortable nation on earth. We’re learning through this tragedy that prosperity and comfort cannot fill our deepest aspirations and needs. Only God can provide that. Peace and hope for the future are filled by God—someone we all need. In the meantime, while the tragedy continues, there’s opportunity for Christians to share the love of Christ with our suffering neighbors.
