Last week, Gov. Andy Beshear announced a $386 million plan to expand high-speed internet to isolated areas of Kentucky. Beshear is using money from President Biden’s COVID relief plan, which partially funds this. But is this good stewardship of public resources? The plan costs $9,000 per household – that’s if every household signs up. Access to the internet is good, but the question is whether the government should be the one to provide it. Private companies like Elon Musk’s Starlink are using cutting-edge technology to provide internet access to rural communities. It’s market forces driven by consumer demand and incentivized by reward that provides for efficient delivery of a product—something the government is incapable of doing.
