Gov. Andy Beshear is at the center of a campaign finance controversy. Kentucky’s campaign finance laws limit donations to $2,100 for a candidate and $15,000 for a political party. But London Mayor Randall Waddle donated six times that limit ($12,000) to Beshear. Waddle also donated $190,000 to the Kentucky Democratic Party. As an elected official, Waddle should have known and obeyed the law. At the same time, the Beshear campaign should have flagged the donation that far exceeds the maximum limit. An investigation by the Kentucky Lantern found the violation, and the Beshear campaign refunded the donation soon after. The consequences remain to be seen. In either case, voters will have their say on November 7 at the ballot box.
