The push to redefine gender knows no bounds. The toymaker Mattel has entered the fray as it released the world’s first gender-neutral doll last month. It’s supposed to look like a seven-year-old with no definable features that are either male or female. No broad shoulders or crisp jawline that would indicate male. No feminine features that would indicate female. The doll is gender fluid and features various models who go by pronouns—him, them, her, or xem. Mattel’s slogan is “A doll line designed to keep labels out and invite everyone in.” The doll can be purchased for $29.99, not much for a kid’s toy today. But parents who know their children are either boys or girls may feel ripped off by a toymaker pushing a false understanding of gender to impressionable children.
