Time to Defund Planned Parenthood July 23, 2014 by Richard Nelson

Warning: graphic content and conversation here. No, this isn’t about Donald Trump’s latest insults, but rather a more serious subject that he doesn’t consider “one of his issues.” I’m talking about the sanctity of human life. More specifically, the undercover videos that caught Planned Parenthood officials calmly discussing morbid methods of abortion extraction methods among sundry other unpleasant details over dinner.

Any time you are in a conversation that starts out “We’ve been very good at getting heart, lung, liver …”  you should be looking for the nearest exit. But when it continues “so I’m not gonna crush that part, I’m gonna basically crush below, I’m gonna crush above, and I’m gonna see if I can get it all intact,” it’s time to call the authorities.

Such was the case with Planned Parenthood Federation’s Senior Medical Director Deborah Nucatola who was caught on undercover video explaining how to best extract unborn baby body parts for medical research. The renumeration for specific parts is mentioned, opening investigations into possible violations of federal law which prohibits the sale of human body parts, but more troubling may have been the ease which Nucatola discussed while sipping wine and enjoying her meal.

Just another day at the office. Or so we’re led to believe. But this isn’t just any office nor is it ho-hum activity done by the average organization.  Planned Parenthood is the symbolic sacred cow of “choice” and 327,000 abortions were carried out last year under their banner of “reproductive freedom.”

The nation’s biggest abortion provider downplayed the video. Cecile Richards apologized for Nucatola’s “tone and statements” but didn’t condemn the grisly reality describing how a very small and vulnerable human life is ended for the sake of, what exactly?

Planned Parenthood Indiana and Kentucky (PPINK) is now under investigation by Indiana’s attorney general.  PPINK President Betty Cockrum issued a statement denying participation in “any tissue donation program. And of course, we hold compliance with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations as an imperative” Cockrum said. “Tissue donation is a standard practice in the medical community in the interest of research to advance the practice of medicine.”

Few are nodding in agreement “Oh, its only tissue donation. We can get on with more important matters now.” To be clear we’re talking about human beings and their dismemberment in the womb. Juxtapose this with an earlier announcement this week about a $100 million venture to search for extraterrestrial life in the universe and one wonders if our race is worthy of discovering life elsewhere when we turn a blind eye to the fate of life in the smaller universe of the human womb.

Outraged politicians are working to defund Planned Parenthood which received roughly $540 million in grants from the federal government last year. Planned Parenthood Louisville reported over $177,000 in government grants according to its 2013 990 form.

Senator Rand Paul introduced an amendment that would end federal funding and nearly half of Planned Parenthood’s $1.2 billion budget. “The continued disregard and disrespect for human life at Planned Parenthood, a partially taxpayer-funded organization, is shocking and appalling,” Paul said. “Not one more taxpayer dollar should go to Planned Parenthood and I intend to make that goal a reality.” Eighty legislators have signed on to a House bill called the Defund Planned Parenthood Act which imposes a one year funding moratorium.

Yet many in the media are ignoring the story. According to the New York Times editorial board, this isn’t a story and if any investigations are done, it should be against the group behind the videos.  “All the news that’s fit to print,” except for stories they apparently feel uncomfortable with.

However disturbing, this story cannot be ignored. Nor can the connection between public funding of the abortion giant, their campaign contributions and federal grants for fetal tissue research. Last year, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provided $76 million in grants for research projects using very small human beings. That same year, politically savvy Planned Parenthood donated over $700,000 to candidates and political parties. Most went to Congressional candidates ($574,701) and most to Democrats ($571,878).

This unholy trinity of blood, money and sanitized language perpetuates a banality incompatible with any people who identify as civilized. It’s time for the government to sever ties with an organization engaging in unspeakable activity and its time they stop incentivizing such activity as well.
