Gender X January 16, 2019 by Staff

When a mother gives birth to a child one of the first things she hears from the doctor is "it's a boy" or "it's a girl." Such declarations are likely to go by the wayside for parents in New York City. That's because a new policy that allows parents to bypass the "male" or "female" boxes the birth certificate in order to choose "X'' for  their newborn. This is the latest chapter of our transgender moment—the time in our history where people can determine their own gender. In fact even adults can now change their gender on their birth certificate. The movement isn't an outlier or something on the fringes but it's part of a larger trend. California, Oregon, and Washington state allow undesignated gender option on birth certificates. A similar provision takes effect in New Jersey in February.
